Waltz Across Cardiff
Our original plan was to import Texas blues boogie into SoCal. I mean, how could a Freddie King and ZZ Top cover band fail, right? Irony of ironies that after having fled Texas for SoCal in the early ‘70’s I’d find souped-up Byrds ruling the roost. First couple of local jam parties I attended had everyone playing countryfied guitar and crooning “Peaceful” and “Easy”. WTH?? Then I worm my way into a concert at La Paloma Theater and some stringbean tumbles (literally) onto the stage and claims to be the author of the Eagles hit song. Nooo way, duuude, you’ve been bonging it too long. Went home afterward, dug out the album cover, and, lo and behold, it was true! The first of many confounding contradictions of SoCal beachbum life lessons. -Doc W.
